When I travel anywhere, even overnight, I re-arrange space. I can't help it; it's an occupational hazard. I usually return things to how I find them when I leave. I did it two years ago when I traveled to Spain for the summer and stayed in an Airbnb. The owner's sister-in-law stopped by for a visit and insisted I not change a thing! For a day trip where I have to bring clothes and various things, I use many of the same skills to organize and pack for travel. Thinking about the flow of the day and what I will need, I make sure I have everything I need to feel taken care of and at home. How to best organize my space to support me in whatever I am doing. This past Saturday, my day trip was to Farmingdale, NY, to speak on a TEDx stage. Even though the call time was early, and we needed to have our hair and make-up done even earlier, it was near enough to my home that I decided to drive in rather than stay at a hotel. Following strict CDC guidelines, we were limited in what we could do and where we could be. There was an outdoor space where we could walk around and practice our talks and a tent to wait between speakers. And I had my car. It became my green room, the space where I did my final practices, meditated, rested, ate food, touched up my lipstick, stayed warm, and was ready to go. And where I could control my environment and limit any distractions or interruptions from entering. My home away from home. In Feng Shui, no matter where we are, the key is to reduce stress and make things as peaceful in our environment as possible. We can do that by how we organize our space and things in a way that supports us. Eliminate any unnecessary clutter. Control what and who enters our space. And surround ourselves with things that bring us joy. When I travel anywhere, that includes carrying a beautiful stone in my bag or pocket that grounds me. On Saturday, by stepping onto the TEDx stage and speaking about staying visible throughout a lifetime, and overturning the myths about women, aging, and visibility for all women, I was able to fulfill on my purpose, which is to create peace by transforming spaces, conversations, and thinking, and helping people step into their power and greatness to make a difference in the world.
